I don’t like calling any recipe “no fail” because I can usually make almost any recipe fail. But … this cake might be an exception.

Boarding House Chocolate Cake

A quick and easy chocolate cake (when you forgot to make something.)
This recipe came from the Kitchener Record in the early 50s from a lady who ran a boarding house for male labourers.  Apparently they really liked this cake.

Equipment

  • 8×8 baking pan

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar white or brown
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1-3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder sifted
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350oF.
    Cream together  butter, eggs, vanilla and sugar.   Mix till well combined.
    Mix together  cream of tartar, flour and cocoa powder and add to above mixture.
    Add milk and mix till very smooth.
    Add cup boiling water to baking soda in cup.  Stir well and put into batter. Mix till very creamy.
    Pour into prepared pan. 
    Bake about 30 minutes.  It could take up to 15 minutes more.  Test after 30 minutes.
